Oban Lorne Ladies 38-0 West of Scotland

MATCH REPORT OBAN VS WEST OF SCOTLAND

10TH MARCH 2018

On a rainy windy day with snow making an appearance during warm up in the Oban girls knew that the weather would provide some difficulties for their match with West of Scotland. After last weeks first game at Cartha, a 26-7 loss the team have been working hard for this game. West of Scotland travelled up from Glasgow facing the elements of snow but manged to make the trip safely. The Oban girls brought a small  squad of 16 against a strong away squad of 22. This game was important for Oban as last year’s Bowl winners, victory in this game we would secure the chance for the shield.

Oban started through receiving the ball with some fumbling from the opposition scrummage which were nothing against Oban’s power. With some big pushes from Ailsa MacLachan Oban made it to  the try line but unfortunately Heather Fothergill didn’t quite manage to ground it. After  another strong scrum for Oban Erika Skofca managed to use her great foot work and secure the first try of the day at only 5 minutes in, a swift kick from Ellie MacNiven brought the score too 7:0. With strong plays and hand work Oban manged to get the ball out to winger Sophia Rosinki who speeded her way to another try unfortunately the wind proved challenging and conversion wasn’t secured bringing the score too 12:0. Great defence from Oban proved challenging for West of Scotland but they were making Oban work for it. After a few changes for West of Scotland they were ready to bring their game harder. But big hits from Ailsa MacLachan along with strong pressure from Audrey Barr on West of Scotland’s 9 Oban were soon dominating the game. Sophia Rosinki doing an excellent game  on the wing made a fantastic break with great foot work securing another try for Oban along with a Conversion from MacNiven bringing the score to 19:0. With Rachel MacDonald and Sarah Congdon working well, making big hit and carries Oban continued to dominate the game. After a strong carry from Ellie MacNiven and swift off load to captain . Laura MacCormick  who managed to reach the try line gaining another try for Oban and another conversion secured bring the score to 26:0. After some great footwork from Heather Fothergill and strong defence from the forwards pack another scrum to Oban was awarded. Oban dominated the scrums after some great hand work Erika Skofca secured the ball scoring another try and conversation gained bringing the score to 33:0 just before half time.

During the second half the weather worsted making it more difficult for both sides with cold hands mistakes were being made by both teams. After a strong push from Oban the ball was gained by Rachel MacDonald who managed to score a try bring the score to 38:0. Audrey Barr was keeping good pressure on their 9 helping the forwards get out from the scrum and able to keep defence strong. After a hard-fought game from both sides against the wild weather Oban managed to secure a super victory of 38:0 allowing them to gain entry to the shield competition. This is a great progression from last year which will hopefully offer the team some great challenges. Also, a special mention to Veronica Speirs who played a great game which will be her last for a month as she joins fellow team mate Lucy Stewart coaching rugby in Africa.  Thanks to all supporters who faced the weather it is appreciated and hope to see you at our next game.
